Care and Repair

To maintain the lustre of your jewellery, avoid exposure to household bleach and other cleaning products, which can quickly cause discolouration.

To clean, gently wipe the surface of your jewellery with a polishing cloth. Avoid commercial liquid polish or “dips.”

We recommend that you store your jewellery in a safe place when engaging in these activities: household cleaning, gardening, water-based activity and whilst exercising.

When not being worn, we recommend that you store your jewellery its original box or a soft lined individual pouch to prevent them being scratched or tangled.

The anti-tarnish tab is a storage strip is designed to absorb atmospheric pollutants to slow down the build-up of tarnish through oxidisation, allowing your jewellery to retain its brightness over time.

To ensure best results, we recommend placing jewellery with the storage strip in an enclosed space and replacing every 3 months or as required.

Product Properties

Hallmarks, often called quality marks or purity marks, are laser applied by the assay's office which guarantees the minimum precious metal content present in your 886 piece.

Each product within the 886 collection is hallmarked with the initials of the Deputy Master of the Mint (AJ), and the exclusive Cross Crosslet and Tower marks.

Every piece excepting chains and stud earrings above 0.5 grams is engraved with its precious metal gram weight as a marker of its intrinsic value. The minimum weight that requires hallmarking for gold is 0.5 gram for Gold and 1 gram for Silver.

Britannia silver and Sterling silver differs in its purity. Whilst Britannia silver is favoured for artisanal projects due to its more supple nature – Sterling silver is known for its strength and durability. Aside from artisanal work, Britannia silver is also used for the bullion coins produced by The Royal Mint.

Gold is measured in carats and divided into 24 parts. Pure gold (Au) is measured as 24ct gold.

18 ct gold is 18/24 parts by mass or 75 per cent gold, pieces created in this carat are ideally suited for everyday wear, as their shape will adjust and adapt to suit the wearer over time, which is beneficial for jewellery intended for a lifetime of wear.

9ct gold is 9/24 parts gold by mass or 37.5 per cent gold which retains it rigidity making pieces crafted in this carat more suitable for casual wear.

The carat finish can be identified by a small stamp (hallmark) located on the gold, typically in a discreet spot such as the inside of a band, the clasp of a necklace or bracelet or the post or butterfly of your earrings.

9ct can be referred to as ‘9ct’, ‘9k’ or ‘375’

18ct can be referred to as ‘18ct’, ‘18k’ or ‘750’

Every piece in our collection is made from solid precious metals including Britannia or Sterling silver, 9ct and 18ct yellow gold and 18ct white gold.

Sustainability

886 by The Royal Mint is the first luxury jewellery brand to use 100% recovered gold within its in-house created products. Sourced from discarded electronic waste, The Royal Mint partners with Canadian clean technology firm Excir to extract gold from discarded laptops and mobile phones.

We work with external manufacturers on silver sourcing for 886 by The Royal Mint, all of whom undergo due diligence and offer a traceable provenance in line with The Royal Mint’s responsible sourcing principles. We have assurances from our suppliers that the silver is recycled and will continue to actively monitor and audit all such claims.

At 886 by The Royal Mint we are committed to only using responsibly sourced precious metals, predominately from recovered and recycled sources. We have undertaken robust due diligence with our suppliers to understand the provenance of the metals we procure. We will continue to work with existing and new suppliers to further enhance our sourcing activities, consistent with our wider sustainability ambitions.
