FAQs

Care and Repair

To maintain the lustre of your jewellery, avoid exposure to household bleach and other cleaning products, which can quickly cause discolouration.

To clean, gently wipe the surface of your jewellery with a polishing cloth. Avoid commercial liquid polish or “dips.”

A diamond can be chipped by a hard blow along its grain so avoid wearing when doing heavy manual work.

Items of jewellery should be stored carefully and separately as diamonds can scratch each other, as well as other stones and metals. Keep any chains fastened to stop them getting tangled up in your jewellery box and keep everything out of direct sunlight, away from heating vents and windowsills.

If you are travelling, keep your jewellery in a soft, cloth pouch. As with daily storage diamonds should be kept in a separate pouch to avoid damaging other items.

Pen/Pencil
To maintain the lustre of your ballpoint pen/propelling pencil, avoid exposure to household bleach and other cleaning products, which can quickly cause discolouration.

To clean, gently wipe the surface of your ballpoint pen/propelling pencil with a polishing cloth. Avoid commercial liquid polish or `dips’.

When not being used, we recommend that you store your ballpoint pen/propelling pencil in your soft lined individual pouch to prevent them being scratched.

Makers Cabinet Pieces

Your pieces are designed to last a lifetime, and the bronze will patina with time and use.

To clean, gently wipe the surface of your pen with a cloth.

When not being used, we recommend that you store your ruler/sharpener/iris in your soft lined individual pouch to prevent them being scratched.

The anti-tarnish tab is a storage strip designed to absorb atmospheric pollutants to slow down the build-up of tarnish through oxidisation, allowing your jewellery to retain its brightness over time.

To ensure best results, we recommend placing jewellery with the storage strip in an enclosed space and replacing every 3 months or as required.

Product Properties

Hallmarks, often called quality marks or purity marks, are laser applied by the Assay's Office which guarantees the minimum precious metal content present in your 886 by The Royal Mint piece.

Each product within the 886 by The Royal Mint collection is hallmarked with the initials of the Deputy Master of the Mint (AJ), and the exclusive Cross Crosslet and Tower marks.

Hallmarks depicted on product images are for representational purposes only and may vary.

Learn more about hallmarking

Every piece excepting chains and stud earrings above 0.5 grams is engraved with its precious metal gram weight as a marker of its intrinsic value. The minimum weight that requires hallmarking for gold is 0.5 gram for Gold and 1 gram for Silver.

Gold is measured in carats and divided into 24 parts. Pure gold (Au) is measured as 24ct gold.

18 ct gold is 18/24 parts by mass or 75 per cent gold, pieces created in this carat are ideally suited for everyday wear, as their shape will adjust and adapt to suit the wearer over time, which is beneficial for jewellery intended for a lifetime of wear.

The carat finish can be identified by a small stamp (hallmark) located on the gold, typically in a discreet spot such as the inside of a band, the clasp of a necklace or bracelet or the post or butterfly of your earrings.

9ct can be referred to as ‘9ct’, ‘9k’ or ‘375’
18ct can be referred to as ‘18ct’, ‘18k’ or ‘750’

Every piece in our collection is made from solid precious metals including Sterling silver, 9ct and 18ct yellow gold, 18ct rose gold and 18ct white gold.

Sustainability

Showcased through selected pieces produced on-site in Llantrisant, South Wales, 886 by The Royal Mint is the first luxury jewellery brand to use gold recovered from e-waste. The Royal Mint partners with Canadian clean-tech firm Excir to extract gold from the printed circuited boards of lap-tops and mobile phones.

All other gold, comprising predominately recovered and recycled sources, is obtained from specific suppliers, all of whom undergo due diligence checks in line with The Royal Mint’s Responsible Sourcing principles.

We work with a specific group of external suppliers to source predominantly recovered and recycled silver - for 886 by The Royal Mint. All our suppliers undergo due diligence checks in line with The Royal Mint’s Responsible Sourcing principles.

Since December 2022, selected 886 pieces, where indicated in the relevant product details, are also made from silver recycled in the UK from disused medical X-rays .
